QVCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Earns Five Star Distinction

Quinebaug Valley Community College is proud to announce that the Beta Beta Pi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) at QVCC is now recognized as a Five Star Chapter, rising from its previous distinction as a One Star Chapter. This rise to a Five Star Chapter makes QVCC the most improved institution regionally for 2019.

PTK operates on a calendar year basis rather than a school year basis, therefore two sets of officers (spring 2019 and fall 2019) participated in the completion of the Five Star requirements: Krystyna Andrews (Co-President, spring 2019, President, fall 2019), Isabella Notarantonio (Co-President, spring 2019), Abigail Newman (Vice-President of Scholarship & Leadership, spring 2019), Amanda Champagne (Vice-President of Scholarship & Leadership, fall 2019), Sara Watson (Vice-President of Scholarship & Leadership, spring 2019), Kevin Champagne (Vice President of Service & Fellowship, fall 2019), Lynzie Hancock (Treasurer, spring 2019 and fall 2019), Stephen Jacobsen (Recording Officer, spring 2019), Breana Weidele (Recording Officer, fall 2019), Rebecca Ledoux (Public Relations Officer, spring 2019), and Austin Grimshaw (Public Relations Officer, fall 2019).

Within the requirements for Five Star Chapter status, the Beta Beta Pi Chapter at QVCC attended two New England Region events and completed a College Project. As part of the College Project, the Co-Presidents met with past QVCC President, Dr. Carlee Drummer in the spring of 2019 and decided to support QVCC’s Food Insecurity project. Member Kevin Champagne organized a community meal for the food insecure in Woodstock, CT and solicited the assistance of PTK in raising money for Stop & Shop gift cards to give away at the community meal. Champagne continued to support the College Project by assisting each week with the unpacking and organization of food donations to the on-campus QVCC food pantry.

Also, within the requirements for Five Star Chapter status, the Beta Beta Pi Chapter at QVCC completed an Honors in Action project. The students picked a theme that interested them, developed an action plan that employed what they learned through research, and applied it to a need at the college and community. The QVCC team decided to assuage the hardships that cause involuntary part-time employment. Based on their research, the biggest factor that bogs down workers’ ability to attain better jobs is a deficit in marketable skills or education.  The QVCC team sought to tackle issues that prevent people from seeking higher education, focusing on childcare and transportation. The team met with the American Job Center (AJC), QVCC’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) coordinator, and QVCC’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) professors to address these issues and find viable solutions to implement on campus and in the community. With the assistance of the AJC, they planned an on-campus orientation to increase students’ job networks and opportunities. They also spread awareness for SNAP, emphasizing its transportation benefits both on campus and around the community. Lastly, they ran a fundraiser for ECE to assist in the certification necessary to establish a daycare on campus. The project began in April 2019, continued through the summer, and culminated in late November/early December 2019. The team consisted of Rowan Coleman (Chepachet, RI), Genie Johnson (Woodstock, CT), and Emily Rosaci (Woodstock, CT); Mark Lowe, Chapter Co-Advisor, mentored the team on the project.

Several QVCC students, in addition to QVCC’s Chapter Co-Advisors, received New England Region Awards. Rowan Coleman of Chepachet, RI won third place for the Distinguished Chapter Member Award due to her significant contributions to the Honors in Action Project. Completion of this project was the final requirement QVCC’s chapter needed to become a Five Star Chapter. QVCC’s chapter officers also won third place for the Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award, which recognizes their leadership in achieving Five Star Chapter status. Notably, QVCC won first place in Theme 8: Worlds of Work for their work in identifying an issue and providing a solution based on thorough research. Finally, QVCC Chapter Co-Advisors Debora Rimkus and Mark Lowe won the Horizon Advisor Awards for supporting their students in completing the requirements to move QVCC from One Star Status to Five Star Status.

Two QVCC students, Kevin Champagne and Kristina Dyba, were also nominated to the All-Connecticut Academic Team. Both students were chosen to represent QVCC on the basis of their excellent academic achievement, dedicated service to the community and QVCC, and their ability to overcome significant challenges in their lives. These students would have been honored at a ceremony at the State Capitol on April 17, however the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Finally, QVCC would like to recognize the new PTK members for the 2019-2020 school year: Amanda Abbott, Caitlin Barclay, Kaylea Bessios, Aaron Blanchflower, Ashley Bonnette, Willard Brin, Julia Christensen, Joshua Cruz, Isabella Donaldson, Ashley Finley, Bryna Ford, Lisa Gardner, Kim Garrity, Rebecca Gervais, Jared Green, William Hamill, Sylwia Helwig, Samantha Hindle, Elijah John, Emily Keeling, Ismail Kiani, Adam Klesser, Candice Koolhaas, Kristen Lafleche, Mark Lamountain, Jordan Lawrence, Kris Levesque, Sherry Lowe, Jordan Mahon, Lillian Mandeville, Michaela Marshall, Jocelyn Matulis, Tatiana Oliveras, Jarrica Rainville, Shelby Pendleton, Anjuli Pickett, Ashley Sackschewsky, Naomi Sargent, Robert Siwko, Ruth Soderburg, Aislin Tracey, Kathryne Vegiard, and Brianna Worden.

QVCC Implements New Booking Tool for Remote Advising

Without the ability to hold in-person advising sessions, Quinebaug Valley Community College has implemented Microsoft Bookings to facilitate remote advising sessions for students. While there won’t ever be a proper substitute for one-on-one, in-person interactions, this platform will help make it even easier for students to get time with our Student Services staff. With the Bookings tool, students now have the ability to book an appointment from wherever they are, with whoever is available, making our student services more accessible. Now students can video chat with an advisor at a designated time of their choosing.

This transition to the Bookings tool can also assist us in collecting important data to help us better serve our students. We’ll be able see the most popular days of the week and time of day when people choose appointments, which services are getting the most requests for information, which topics within those services students are looking for most frequently – with potential for even more.

The QVCC Foundation to Support Summer Classes for Students

Free Professional Development for Local Businesses

QVCC  and The Quinebaug Valley Community College Foundation are here for our students and for our community during this unprecedented pandemic that is impacting our state, our nation, and our world.

The QVCC Foundation will be providing the College with an additional $50,000 gift to support QVCC students during this crisis to help pay for summer courses.  With the emphasis on increased needs for healthcare workers, and the recognition that Spring classes and lives have been severely impacted, the Foundation asks that part of the grant be used to assist students wanting to take Phlebotomy/medical courses – Techniques in Phlebotomy, Law and Ethics for Health Care or Medical Terminology. The remainder of the $25,000 will be allocated to all other students. The money is only available to students who were registered for courses during the spring semester.  Monique Wolanin, director of institutional advancement, stated, “The QVCC Foundation extends our thanks to the hundreds of donors who believe in our mission and to the social service agencies in our communities who also support QVCC students. If you want to learn more about these funds, please contact the Financial Aid Office, Gloria Rivera or if you wish to learn more about the QVCC Foundation, please contact me.” Monique Wolanin can be reached at mwolanin@qvcc.edu .  Cindi Brassington, QVCC professor of allied health, is very appreciative of the Foundation stating, “The QVCC foundation’s generous gift will allow students to continue their healthcare training during the summer 2020 session.  The increased need of trained healthcare workers due to the global pandemic makes this gift vital not only to students but to our entire community.  Our community donors always come through to offer financial support to QVCC students, and for this I am deeply appreciative.”

Free Professional Development To aid in professional development opportunities, the QVCC Business and Industry Services department will be offering virtual workshops, free of charge, to the business community to help their employees while temporarily working from home.  The 10 workshops will include: Transitioning to Telework & Telecommuting, Virtual Team Building, Managing Remote High Performance Teams, Stress Management, Organizational Skills, Time Management, Self-Leadership, Goal Setting, Emotional Intelligence and Personal Productivity.  For more information contact Andrew Morrison, director of business and industry services.

Course Withdrawal Deadline Extended to April 30

We at QVCC realize that this is a stressful and uncertain time that we are all experiencing; however, please know that the QVCC Community and CSCU system are committed to supporting you as we finish out the spring 2020 semester.

At this time, QVCC has placed a hold on processing withdrawals. This is a temporary measure to make sure you have the time to check-in with either your instructors in the courses you are currently taking or with an advisor that can help you determine the best plan of action for you at this time. If you receive federal financial aid and are considering withdrawing from classes, (which may result in you having to pay back funds to the college), please seek out an advisor or the financial aid office to make sure you understand if that will be the case.

You may withdraw from a course(s) through April 30, 2020 by completing the Add/Drop form, also located on QVCC’s forms webpage.  The completed form should be submitted to the Registrar at qvrecords@qvcc.edu. You will be able to withdraw from classes effective on the date you wish, but no withdrawals will be processed before April 3, 2020. If you are thinking about dropping a class, we highly recommend that you first speak with your instructor. This conversation will give you a clear overview on where you stand in the class. At that point, if you still want to withdraw, we urge you to call the Student Success Center at 860-932-4020 or email advising@qvcc.edu. Please leave your contact information and an academic advisor will reach out to help you. During the conversation with the advisor, please mention if you are receiving Federal Financial Aid or Veterans funding, as withdrawing from a class could affect this funding.

Quinebaug Valley Community College is proud to announce that three of our student artists, Kaylah Brace of Webster, MA, Jaimie Lohman of Dayville, CT, and Kristi Luchi of Plainfield, CT were selected to showcase their art in the 2020 Community: Transfer Student Exhibition at the Donald and Linda Silpe Gallery at the Hartford Art School (University of Hartford). The exhibition will continue to run until March 12, 2020.

Students chosen for the exhibition demonstrated exceptional work, showcasing creative perspective and a mastery of skills. To be eligible for submission, students were required to submit a portfolio containing 10 pieces of original work, a 500-word artist statement, and a letter of recommendation. Students also had to be enrolled in any Connecticut Community College (Asnuntuck, Capital, Gateway, Housatonic, Manchester, Middlesex, Naugatuck, Northwestern CT, Norwalk, Quinebaug, Three Rivers, Tunxis); or enrolled at Holyoke Community College, Springfield Technical Community College, or Greenfield Community College.
