QVCC Earns 2020-2021 Military Friendly® School Designation

Military Friendly School 2020-2021Quinebaug Valley Community College announced that it has earned the 2020-2021 Military Friendly® School designation, maintaining Gold status distinction.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,000 schools participated in the 2020-2021 survey with 695 earning the designation.

The 2020-2021 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

Annie Hill, QVCC Veterans Associate and School Certifying Official stated, “It is such an honor to have been named a Military Friendly® School, maintaining our Gold status distinction. Quinebaug Valley Community College is so proud to have been recognized for the level of service provided to the students who have so selflessly served our country. Veteran students are an integral part of our college community, and their successes are indicative in this achievement.”

Military Friendly’s National Director Josh Rosen stated, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to colleges creates a competitive atmosphere that encourages colleges to invest in programs to provide educational outcomes that are better for the Military Community as a whole.”

QVCC Announces Spring Corporate Training Workshops

Quinebaug Valley Community College has announced the spring schedule of training programs for local business professionals. From March through June 2020, the QVCC Danielson campus will host several corporate-training workshops through the Business & Industry Services department. The workshops will kick off with a two-session Conflict Resolution program, held on March 4 and March 11, 2020. Later in March, QVCC will launch its popular Leadership @ All Levels and Succeeding as a Supervisor series.

In April, the college’s Feel Better – Work Better series will begin, with six one-day workshops on the in-demand topics of Emotional Intelligence, Organizational Skills, Managing Workplace Stress & Anxiety, Time Management, Assertiveness and Self-Confidence, and Goal Setting & Getting Things Done.

“These workshops are designed to help folks develop new skills and build on existing strengths,” explained Business & Industry Services Director Andrew Morrison. “We ask the trainees to bring their real-world insight and experience to the table so they can learn from one another as much as from the trainer. Everyone leaves with new tools that can be immediately applied in the workplace.”

Registration fees vary per workshop and prospective participants are encouraged to ask their employer to sponsor them into their chosen program. Details on the spring workshops, the registration process, and onsite training options can be found by visiting www.qvcc.edu/training or by contacting the QVCC Business & Industry Services department at (860) 932-4360.

QVCC Celebrates Black History Month: “African Americans and the Vote” with Dr. Stacey Close

Black History Month 2020February is Black History Month. Quinebaug Valley Community College invites you to join us on February 12 at 10am-2pm in the Robert E. Miller Auditorium as we celebrate Black History Month and the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the Fifteenth Amendment. QVCC is honored to welcome back Dr. Stacey Close, Associate Provost/Vice President for Equity and Diversity at Eastern Connecticut State University, for the presentation, “African Americans and the Vote.”

Dr. Stacey CloseIn addition to the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) and the right of black men to the ballot after the Civil War, the year 2020 also marks the centennial (100th anniversary) of the Nineteenth Amendment and the culmination of the women’s suffrage movement. The theme speaks to the ongoing struggle on the part of both black men and black women for the right to vote. Through voting-rights campaigns and legal suits from the turn of the twentieth century to the mid-1960s, African Americans made their voices heard as to the importance of the vote. The contribution of black suffragists occurred not only within the larger women’s movement, but within the larger black voting rights movement.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Sponsored by QVCC’s Cultural Programming Committee.

The QVCC Foundation’s Ongoing Commitment to a Debt-Free Education

The Quinebaug Valley Community College Foundation is offering $140,000 in scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year. QVCC is proud that the last nine graduating classes left QVCC with zero federal student loan debt. Thanks to state grants, excellent financial aid advising, and scholarships from The Foundation, QVCC is able to provide a debt-free college education to students of Northeast Connecticut and beyond.

The majority of scholarships are available to new (incoming) QVCC students, as well as returning students. Part-time students are also eligible, but must be taking two or more classes. Most require a minimum GPA of 3.0., but several scholarships are available for QVCC students graduating in May 2020.

The College continues to help our residents become students. Kate Crescenzo, resident of Willimantic, CT, was awarded a $1,500 for the 2019-2020 academic year, which has allowed her to graduate this upcoming May debt-free! “I have had an amazing educational experience at QVCC. I’m excited and confident to move forward in my academic and professional careers with a solid foundation, thanks to my time here. I am even more grateful that I have received this outstanding education completely debt-free!”

QVCC Foundation scholarship applications go live on February 1, 2020. Visit www.QVCC.edu/scholarships to learn more or apply. The scholarship application deadline is March 13, 2020.
